How it actually plays out
She spends $900 a month on groceries and $400 on dining, all on her Amex Gold at 4x. After a year, she holds about 62,400 Membership Rewards points and wants to fly to Paris.
She taps Amex MR above and sees Air France/KLM Flying Blue transfers 1:1. She joins Flying Blue (free, five minutes), uses the Award Search Tools to confirm a business class saver seat, then transfers 60,000 points from her Amex account and books it for 60,000 miles — a seat that retails around $3,500.
